Agile started in 1958 as a revolution against waterfall
Scrum was pioneered – 1986
Agile Enterprise 1995- The enabler for tomorrows agile enterprise
Agile and lean six sigma developed in parallel with different industry enterprise.
The focus of each discipline is:
Lean (including Kanban)- Eliminate waste
Agile (Including Scrum) – Embrace change
Six sigma- Reducing variation and waste
Project Management: Ensure success of organization’s mission
The purpose of this post is to highlight that while all of these management disciplines have different focal points they may all be used in tandem.
Use of one discipline does not preclude or exclude the use of another discipline. Many organizations may focus on one discipline without factoring in the use of other methods or ignoring them all together. In this post, I propose that organizations may adapt all methods at once for the best outcomes rather than exclude one method to leverage the benefits of others.
Moreover, as the Lean Six Sigma roles slide defines, defining process owners may be a better approach to project management versus defining activity or tasks owners. The DMAIC model is also an approach that can be integrated no matter what approach is chosen. For instance, in a project management approach it is common to define, measure, analyze, improve and control through the initiation, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing phases. In my previous organization there was a tendency to isolate these frames of thought and approaches when in reality, they work together to produce optimal results and faster customer value. Organizations that do a good job of this include Samsung, IBM and Conde Nast.
