Project Management as an Industry and Profession

Imagine a profession that crosses 100% of all industries, 100% of all job functions, 100% of all geographies. The answer: Project Management Professionals (http://www.talenteconomy.io/2017/11/22/future-project-management/)

Meanwhile, businesses struggle to hire these roles. When businesses struggle, labor markets suffer. What makes matters more dangerous is that there are estimates that indicate significant growth in the labor market for project management over the next 10 years.

Many business job postings are advertised as project management roles but detail specific skills and requirements of a subject matter expert. Therefore, hiring in these jobs have led to more emphasis on operations focused skills rather than the application of project management skills and acumen.

The business pain is clear, project management skills are in high demand, but hiring these skills may require a shift in the mindset of many business executives. For instance, executives may view project management as a skill rather than understanding and being educated about the profession. The two mindsets may be, “business executives: process information in terms of initiatives and business value”, “project management professionals: process information in terms of scope, budget, and schedule.” Both are correct, but project management offers more standardization and transferability.

Here is a potential solution. A project manager can work in any industry. Perhaps, this indicates that project management, like many other fields on the Bureau of Labor Statistics website, can be classified as an industry, in and of itself (https://www.bls.gov/iag/tgs/iag54.htm). Maybe that idea can help prompt awareness and discussion by creating meetings that solve fixed mindsets about business “as usual”.
